carved earth: yosemite

The Yosemite Wilderness, I doubt a grander place exists on this earth. Surely there are waterfalls taller or stronger, cliffs and mountains that reach further into the sky, rivers that have carved out deeper ravines and wider valleys. But the sheer volume of natural wonders within this section of the Sierra Nevada Mountains is unmatched. The granite cliffs that form the valley's walls look as if they were carved by giants; the clouds and trees, painted with lifelike fantasy by Michelangelo. The topography and aura of such a place can only be known through personal discovery. Simple photographic reproductions do little to express the feeling of venturing through this marvelous landscape.

"It is easier to feel than to realize, or in any way explain, Yosemite grandeur. The magnitudes of the rocks and trees and streams are so delicately harmonized, they are mostly hidden." -John Muir
